Sunday, August 4, 2024
7:00-8:00 AM Check-in & day of registration for Flow Duro Challenge at Big Creek Park. (This is only for those that did not pick up your packet on Saturday)

CAN I REGISTER ON RACE DAY?

Yes, but we prefer you register earlier.  If you must register on race day you will pay a higher price.  Please see the above schedule for packet pick-up.

ARE HELMETS REQUIRED?

Yes, helmets will be required for both events.

WHAT IS THE MINIMUM AGE TO RACE THE FLOW-DURO CHALLENGE?

The minimum age is 9 years old based on the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association guidelines. This is not a race for beginners as the courses are fast & technical and have steep climbs to reach the top where the race begins.

WILL THERE BE A PRE-RIDE OF THE FLOW-DURO COURSE?

Yes, there will be a Pre-Ride of the course on Saturday @ 1 PM.

DO I HAVE TO DO ALL 3 FLOW DURO CHALLENGE RACES? OR CAN I JUST SIGN UP FOR ONE?

You can sign up for one or all of the Flow Duro Challenges races. You can only be considered for the “Champion of the Dirt Wave Series” if you attend all 3 races.

WHY ARE THERE ONLY 125 SPOTS AVAILABLE IN THE FLOW DURO CHALLENGE RACE?

We are only allowing 125 people to register for the race so we have plenty of time to do 2 timed laps down the race course and need to allow time for climbing back to the top in between.

HOW DO I GET TO THE TRAILS?

LOCATION: Big Creek Trails, Newport, Oregon
Big Creek https://goo.gl/maps/V5vDYpFyqR51Ywnz7

Parking is limited so please see below for directions on where to park.

WHERE DO I PARK AT THE TRAILS?

Please park at Agate Beach Wayside from here you will need to bike or walk the .09 mile “Ocean to Bay Path” to Big Creek Park.  If you still need to pick up your race packet on Sunday, you will need to check in at Big Creek Park between 7-8:00 AM and then ride the 3 miles to the top of the race course.  If you picked up your race packet on Saturday, arrive w/ enough time to park and ride in to the race course.    Please allow yourself plenty of time (at least 40 minutes) as the race will start promptly at 9 am.

There will be water and a porta-potty at the bottom of the race course.

We will have limited designated parking available near Big Creek Park in a gravel lot.  This trail system is in a neighborhood and we want to be respectful of taking over all the parking so we suggest parking at Agate Beach Wayside and riding your bike or walking the “Ocean to Bay Trail” which will bring you to Big Creek Park.

WHAT IF MY FAMILY WANTS TO WATCH?

Access to this race course is a bit limited (similar to Klootchy Creek) unless you are on a bike.  We will have limited vans shuttling people from Big Creek Park to the bottom of the race course.  Shuttles are not for racers, only spectators. The shuttles to the race course for spectators are for Sunday only. They will begin running in the morning from Big Creek Park at 7:45 AM.  Only event vehicles are allowed on the dirt road during the event as the road will be closed to through traffic.  Family members are welcome to ride their bikes the 1.5 miles on the closed gravel road to the bottom of the race course and then find a safe place along the course to watch.  The finish line is close to the gravel road and will be a fun place to watch them come in.

There will be water and a porta-potty at the bottom of the race course.

WHERE DO WE STAY?

The Newport Chamber site has links to lodgings options in the area:

Camping: Newport is home to two fantastic State Parks; South Beach State Park & Beverly Beach State Park.

There are also camping options at the Port of Newport.

A bit off the beaten path is a great HipCamp option that can accommodate a lot of campers.  BeaverCreek Artfarm/ Heart Barn is a 22 acre farm just 20 or so minutes from Newport (not far off 101) and in a world of it’s own!  @heartbarn https://www.hipcamp.com/en-US/land/oregon-beavercreek-artfarm-heart-barn-4nelh026?shareid=p4oxxiqrkk

WILL THERE BE FOOD OR DRINKS AVAILABLE?

We will have extra water available for riders at the trailhead. Come prepared with your own water, power bars, snacks, etc. We will have a food cart on site from 11-3pm on Saturday and 11-2:30 on Sunday for you to purchase food on your own. We will have local beer on tap for purchase as well.

I AM A BEGINNER RIDER, WHAT SHOULD I SIGN UP FOR?

Our Saturday event has a beginner option. If you have been interested in coming to check out the trails but weren’t sure where to ride, this is the perfect event to have a fun & supportive ¨Guide¨ show you the trails. The Beginner Ride is great for someone new to riding that wants to check out the trails at a mellow pace. Beginner Ride: Easy, no-drop ride for adults.

Our Sunday Race is not really recommended for beginner riders. The course demands that riders have some technical skills as the course is fast and there is a steep, black diamond area at the top.

HOW DO I SUPPORT THE LOCAL TRAILS?:

You may donate directly to the Newport Trail Stewards (NEWTS), the local bike club that builds and maintains all of the trails in Newport.
